Ethan was born on the 19th of May 1982. His parents were wealthy and co-owned a Law firm (Kane, Kane & Douglas – usually shortened to KKD) at which his father (Maurice) also worked. The family lived in a large home just outside of Dublin city.
(Aside: the family names are somewhat neutral, but my idea is that they are of English descent having moved to Ireland areound the time of the Tudor conquest)
Growing up, Ethan had a very strong relationship with his uncle Paul. Paul had been an attorney at KKD, but siffered a mental breakdown when his wife died and had to step down. Paul became interested in occultism and joined various spiritualist societies including the Freemasons. This interest in spiritualism was passed on to Ethan at a young age.
Ethan went to study law at Trinity College, not so much because he wanted to more because it was expected of him (later on he realised that he had never really considered other options). However this was a difficult time for the family. Ethan’s parents were going through a painful divorce. His father accused his mother (Dianne) of being unfaithful. Things came to a head when Maurice suffered a stroke. Though he didn’t die, he was left largely immobile. Since the divorce wasn’t complete, Dianne gained power of attorney, comitted Maurice to a private nursing home, and absconded with her lover (and her husband’s money). To compound the miserable situation Paul was committed to permanent pschiatric treatment at St Patrick’s Hospital at around the same time.
The sudden loss of his family had a profound effect upon Ethan. He stopped attending his classes and became involved with several fringe societies at Trinity. He also began looking into occultism. It was during this time that he met a group called Choda (Hindi for “left”) who opposed consumerism and modern society. Choda had several “open houses” where members could come and go freely. Ethan moved into these open houses and within a few months had dropped out of college completely.
Over the next few years he learned to live off the grid, dumpster diving for food and supplies, and engaging in spiritual exploration and political activism. He gained a group of followers from among the members of Choda who liked his views on spirituality, and Ethan found he was a good storyteller and orator.
To be completed…
